Planning and implementing infrastructure for eLearning and competency certification programs.

Your company has committed to a Web based learning program and maybe an associated competency certification program. Now how do you deliver it to the employees at headquarters, and more challengingly how to get it to the field offices and roaming sales force?  You're aware of many options to deliver and manage your distributed eLearning program, but what solution is right for our business, budget, field force and training staff?

While most eLearning programs share common requirements and solutions, every one has unique objectives and available resources that require analysis, design and planning. There's a lot to consider:

  • Synchnonous (Live) or Asynchronous (flexible study times)?
  • eLearning mixed with live training? Common certification?
  • Type training content to be delivered, including bandwidth, multimedia requirements?
  • Typical and maximum storage requirements for the courses
  • On/Off line mix. That is will student be on-line for whole session or will part or all be downloaded to his/her PC / Mac for off line study.
  • What is the technology level of the installed base of "student" client PC's?  What minimum hardware and software requirements can be imposed on the  clients machines at headquarters and the field organization?
  • How many students will there be?
  • What is the peak loading factor? Will most studying be done in concentrated time periods or more evenly distributed.
  • Are the courses organized into a curriculum management system. If not, how are they organized.
  • What training compliance and/or certification is required? How will it be delivered? Will there be an on-line registry of individual compliance?
  • Is this an on-going program, or one-time, associated with a product launch, compliance situation, merger etc.?
  • What is the confidentiality level of our material? Confidentiality of certification results?
  • How much time do we have to get the program up and running?

All these elements need to be considered, analyzed and quantified to determine what technology and capacity is required for the effective delivery and management of a web-based learning program.
